A slogan competition for the Global Citizenship – Litter & Waste Green Code was organised within the school.
The winner of the competition received some treats and a “Homework Pass” to use on a day of her choice.

5th Green Flag for Carriganima National School
Green Schools Renewal Visit with Tricia Beecher On Monday 21st March 2022, we had a renewal visit via zoom with Tricia Beecher. The pupils in Mrs. Sheahan's class answered questions about the 7 steps and what we are doing in the school for Biodiversity. They spoke about making bug hotels, planting bulbs, winning the Big Grow competition, drawing habitat maps and having Green Schools committee meetings in our garden, Biodiversity Application was submitted on Thursday 31st March 2022. |
Some things that we have been working on to improve biodiversity in our school garden and to increase our awareness of biodiversity include: * Installing bird feeders and houses to attract and feed the birds in our school garden. * Planting various new plants in our school garden, sowing a wildflower patch and planting spring bulbs. * We installed an ‘Outdoor Classroom’ which we use for some of our G Schools meeting in the fine weather. * We also revisited previous themes to identify links between them and the Biodiversity theme. Since starting the "Biodiversity" theme, the pupils are more focused on the habitats of their school environment and are encouraged to make the habitat friendly for insects and small animals. They are also encouraged to plant a variety of flowers and vegetables. |

We are really enjoying working on the ‘Biodiversity’ theme.
In Year 1, we completed an environmental review which involved conducting a ‘Biodiversity Awareness Survey’ among our pupils.
The children in Mrs. Sheahan’s class compiled a ‘Habitat Map’ of our school documenting signs of Biodiversity.
We revisited previous themes (Litter & Waste, Energy, Water and Travel) to identify links between them and the Biodiversity theme.
We completed another environmental review this year (Year 2) to compare the results to Year 1.
We were delighted with the difference that we have increased our awareness of the importance of Biodiversity
and implemented new and dynamic ways to help improve our school environment.
We noticed an increase in certain animals in the school grounds including butterflies and robins.
The committee also continue to monitor the changes put intplace for the previous four themes.

Planting Time
Today 6th December 2021, we planted Tulip, Allium and Daffodil bulbs.
We collected seeds from our plants and will store them until the Spring.
We also picked some of our Raspberries.

We competed in the Innocent Big Grow Competition and were delighted to win first prize in June 2021. Each week, we submitted updates and photographs and we announced the Star Grower who received a prize. We can't believe how far we have come since taking part in an online Bee Workshop by Irish Wildlife Trust and a Composting workshop by Donal O'Leary of Waste Down in November 2020. We also took part in National Tree week in March 2021 and Earth Day in April 2021. Tony Kenneally of Heritage Ireland visited our school in October 2021. |

Heritage visit 6th October 2021
Tony Kenneally of Heritage Ireland visited our school on 6th October 2021.
Using stuffed birds of prey, the children got to see and touch birds such as Sparrowhawk and Peregrine Falcon; the fastest animal on the planet!
Tony explained how birds of prey are adapted for hunting and the interactions between them and their prey.
He spoke about birds that are native to Ireland and gave a presentation on “Birds of Prey” to all classes from Junior Infants to 6th Class.
The children really enjoyed learning the different aspects that Tony covered.

Earth Day - 22nd April 2021
Today (22nd April 2021), we took part in Earth Day which is an international event celebrated around the world to pledge support for environmental protection.
This year's theme for Earth Day is 'Restore Our Earth'.
There were 1,130 schools in Ireland signed up. Over 33,000 pupils joined which was live streamed from the National History Museum of Ireland.
It was very interesting as we went through the various eras of Biodiversity and Climate Change in Ireland.
It was a day that reminds us to continue to do the little things that help our environment, things like turning off the lights,
the conservation of energy, planting trees and reducing, reusing and recycling.

Planting Time – The children planted Spinach, Salad Leaves, Radish and Beetroot.
They used the rainwater from the “Water Butt” to water the seeds which helps keep the environment green.

Our first Star Grower of 2021 and the visit of the Innocent Drinks "Grassy Van"

16th April 2021 There was great excitement when Anna from Innocent Drinks arrived in the “Grassy Van” to deliver our prize of Innocent Smoothies from the Big Grow Competition 2020. From planting the seeds to harvesting our small crops, every child was delighted to get their hands dirty and learn about growing their own food which will help them develop healthy habits. They really enjoyed taking part and are already looking forward to this year’s competition. Congratulations to Eva who is our first Star Grower. It was very difficult to pick the Star Grower as everyone took great care of the Peas over the last few weeks Who will be the next Star Grower? |

Composting Workshop for schools

The children really enjoyed the composting workshop today given by Donal O'Leary which was very informative and interesting.
We not only learned what materials to compost but also how to make good compost by having the right mix of wet and dry materials.
After the workshop, we set up a rota for emptying the school's compostables into the compost bin daily.

Online Bee Workshop by Irish Wildlife Trust
On Tuesday 17th November 2020, we had an online Bee Workshop with Kieran Flood of the Irish Wildlife Trust.
The children really enjoyed it and they learned about pollination, the different types of bees, why they are important,
where they live and how we can help them by creating habitat.
With our biodiversity garden and bug hotel, we have a lot done to support bees.
We intend to plant a wild flower garden and some berry bushes in the Spring to create even more bee friendly.

New Mural in our Sensory / Biodiversity Garden
We are delighted with the new mural and how our Sensory / Biodiversity garden is coming along.
We wish to convey our sincere thanks to Tiziana and Martina for painting the mural and to everyone who supplied plants and garden items.

Green Day Celebrations
On Friday 2nd October 2020, we held a “Green Day Celebrations” for the recent Green Schools flag and Certificate we achieved for the “Travel” theme.
Pupils wore green coming to school and had a great day with lots of fun activities. We planted Daffodil and Tulip bulbs, Winter flowers, Oregano, mini Butterfly Bush, Sedum, Olive Tree and Scots Pine evergreen Conifer one of Ireland’s native coniferous trees. We were delighted to receive the Scots Pine Conifer from the Tree Council of Ireland which coincided with Tetra Pak Tree Day.
A very big congratulations to the entire Green Schools Committee who worked hard implementing changes around the school.
Also to parents and the entire school community for supporting the work of the Green Schools Committee and making our school and grounds
a beautiful and environmentally friendly place to be.

September 2020 Biodiversity is the 5th Flag in the Green Schools Programme. We have already started work on the next Green Schools theme which is Biodiversity. We will plant a wildflower garden in early Spring to attract different insects and we will keep track of the seasons and changes during these times. The children and parents completed a Year 1 Biodiversity Awareness survey. We created a graph and displayed it on the GS Noticeboard. We will compare our findings with the survey that will be completed in Year 2. Work has begun on our Sensory bed which has plants of different colours, tastes, scents and textures. We built a Bug Hotel using twigs, logs, rotting wood, dry leaves, sticks, hollow plant stems and pine cones. Children in the Senior Room are excited to put their own mark in the garden and are thinking of ideas to add a personal touch to it. We look forward to hearing their ideas so watch this space!! We were runners up in the Big Grow competition. The prize is €150 voucher for Grow It Yourself and some innocent smoothies. |

The BIG Travel Challenge (February 2020)
We here in Carriganima National School are playing our part by setting realistic and achievable targets for the Travel theme.
We encourage the children to use “sustainable” travel to school instead of using single car travel..
This includes taking the bus, Park 'n Stride, walking with an adult or Carpooling if walking is not possible.
Quite a few people Park 'n Stride. They leave their car near the Church and walk to the school.
Parents and children also take the opportunity to get involved in the Walking Bus.
If your child is cycling, please ensure they wear a helmet and hi-vis vest and is supervised at all times.

WOW - Walk On Wednesday

On Wednesday 19th February 2020, pupils wore high-viz jackets and took part in the W.O.W. Day as part of our Green Schools initiatives under the Travel theme along with their parents. Pupils wore green coming to school and participated in a range of fun activities..

Since February, parents have been taking part in the Walking Bus and Park and Stride. They parked at the church and walked their children safely to school and everyone wore a hi-visibility waistcoat. A walking bus is like a normal bus but on foot. It takes the same route to school every day. Walking, scooting or even cycling to school has so many benefits for the community. Not only does it help to keep families fit and healthy but it also helps to ease congestion and reduce air pollution outside our school. #BeatAirPollution @GreenSchoolsIre 100% of our pupils use sustainable transport to travel to school. National Scoot to School Week (11th - 15th March 2019) We celebrated National Scoot to School week on Tuesday 12th March 2019 through a number of fun activities. The children were excited bringing in their scooters, flickers and bicycles to school. Catherine from the Green Schools Team led a number of activities for the Scooter Workshop which covered scooter / helmet safety, scooter maintenance, emergency stops and obstacle courses! All the children who took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves. By participating in the National Scoot to School day we are showing our support for a greener, healthier environment. |

Our Walking Bus Ticket
All Aboard the Carriganima Community "Walking Bus"
During the month of February 2019,
we did the walking bus 10 day challenge. We had a great start to our day. Pupils, parents and staff members assembled at the Church to board the "Walking Bus". Everyone wore a hi-vis vest. This was part of the Green Schools Travel Theme. Pupils chatted and enjoyed the walk and there was less congestion in the school car park. The whole school was using sustainable travel to come to school. |

In October 2018, all classes participated in a competition to compose a new code for Carriganima National School as we begin working on the next theme which is for Travel.
The standard was very high so we decided to put a few codes together and come up with a little poem reminding us of the importance of choosing green methods of travel both to and from school. Travel Green Code created by:

On Wednesday 2nd May 2018, four members of our “Green Team” travelled to the Radisson Blu Hotel, Cork to receive our third Green Flag for Water.
We were awarded this prestigious internationally accredited award by An Taisce! Anna and Razan along with Kay & Lavinia (Green Schools Co-Ordinators) were there to represent the school at the ceremony. A very big thanks to all in the school who got actively involved and to the committee members who worked so hard. |
Women and children in countries around the world walk on average six km a day to access water which is often unclean
or simply not there due to drought. To spread awareness of water issues around the world we took part in the Walk for Water
in Gougane Barra, Co. Cork on Tuesday 21st March 2017. Mr. Newman, Gina & Kay accompanied the children.

There were 10 people allowed from different schools to take part. It involved carrying 6 litres of water in a backpack for a distance of 6 kilometres.
The aim of the walk was to raise awareness of water scarcity in developing countries and to develop empathy for the lives of children in these countries.
We began by filling up the empty bottles with water from the stream. These bottles were then distributed among the children and packed in bags.
We set off on the walk supervised by the teachers and guides. It was very cold and the mountains were covered with snow but It was very enjoyable.
When we returned to the school, we poured the water into a bucket to use again.
This ensured there was no water wasted!!! All the empty bottles were then recycled.

In 2012, Carriganima National School first got involved in the Green Schools programme. Since then, we have achieved two green flags for our school. We were awarded our first flag for our hard work on the theme of LITTER & WASTE and we received our second flag for our work on ENERGY CONSERVATION.
Now we are working on our 3rd flag on the theme of WATER CONSERVATION which involves reducing the amount of water used and raising awareness among members of the school and local communities. This is a two year programme. The Green Schools Committee comprises of the Principal, Class Teacher, Green Schools Co-Ordinator, Caretaker, pupils and parents. Everyone is given a particular job to ensure whole-school involvement. To achieve the flag, there are seven steps set out by An Taisce to be followed and completed over the next two years. The pupils are following these seven steps to sort the theme of Water by analysing the problem, devising an action plan, measuring their success by evaluation and maintenance. Regular monitoring and modifications take place where / when necessary. As with previous themes, after forming a committee, it begins with an environmental review. We assess the current situation and identify areas for improvement. Several surveys were carried out to find how much water was being used, by the school and at home which made us aware of how much water we waste at home and in school. Most pupils were surprised by how much water was wasted. The entire school has been busy conserving water. On a weekly basis we…. ● Check that taps are turned off properly ● Leaky Detectives are in place who report any drops / leaks to our Caretaker ● Use a basin in the sink when washing up We still have an Energy Squad whose job is to switch off lights and shut doors. Our Waste Monitors have very little to do as everyone is conscious of keeping the classrooms and school grounds litter free. |

● Fill the sink instead of allowing the water to run ● Have a shower instead of a bath as it uses less water ● An average shower uses 10 litres of water per minute, so taking a shorter shower will save water ● Turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth, to reduce water consumption from 12 litres to 2 litres ● Don’t overfill the kettle when making tea or coffee ● Keep a jug of water in the fridge as waiting for a tap to run cold to drink can waste more than 10 littres of water in a day ● When using the washing machine and dishwasher, ensure that the machine is full and use the economy cycle ● Instead of washing your car with a hose, use a bucket of water and sponge ● Repair any leaking taps as 12 litres can escape per minute ● Install a water butt and use the rainwater to water plants / grass |

Some useful tips to conserve water at home
Turn off the taps when washing your teeth - you can save six litres of water.
Take a shower not a bath - don't use power showers as a 10 minute shower uses as much water as three baths!
Fill the kettle for the right amount - you can save energy as well!

Rainwater harvesting
We collect rain water from the water butt. Our caretaker uses it to water plants as rainwater has no minerals or chemicals added to it so it is much kinder to plants than tap water. We also use it to wash our art brushes and containers. If you are on a water meter, collecting rainwater can reduce your monthly bills during the peak summer season when gardens need water most.
The majority of daily water consumption is within the home but during dry periods in Spring and Summer that changes, as many start watering their gardens with a hosepipe and washing cars, garden furniture and patios.

The water cycle is an amazing process and we touched on it when discussing evaporation.
It shows how evaporation occurs, where condensation occurs and precipitation (rain). It is so simple and very clever so we decided to create our very own Mini water cycle.

Homemade Cleaners
We made our own cleaning products which are effective and inexpensive. All purpose cleaner and deodorizer We used 4 tablespoons of baking soda and warm water. It can be used for cleaning kitchen counters and appliances.Just pour the solution on a clean sponge and wipe. Scented all purpose cleaner What we used: 1 part white vinegar 1 part warm water Lemon rind Rosemary sprigs Combine all the ingredients together, pour into a spray bottle, shake and then let infuse for a week before using. This solution can be used to freshen laundry, banish spots on carpet and much more. The fruit's acid adds extra cleaning properties which is perfect for stubborn stains. |
We continue to monitor litter & waste and energy usage
Daily monitoring of dust bins and yard and ensuring all appliances are switched off and doors and windows are kept closed. Anti-litter and energy signs are still posted around the school where people are reminded of how to deal with their waste and to turn off switches. We had a renewal visit on Monday 5th March 2018. |

2nd Flag - ENERGY Theme
On Friday 27th May 2016, Seán Kelly MEP raised our second green flag for Energy during his visit to the school.
On Monday 16th May 2016 in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Carriganima National School was awarded its second Green Schools flag
for Energy at the Green-Schools Awards Ceremony.
Kay, Gina, Lydia and Robin received the flag and certificate on behalf of the whole school.
Well done to the Green Committee and the entire school committee for the effort made during the past two years.

As part of our work on the theme “Energy” we must have a day of action so we decided to have a “Low Energy Day”! We organised a “Low Energy Day” on Monday 8th February 2016 for the whole school to participate in. We informed everyone of our plans through Green Schools committee meetings, by putting up posters in the hallway, noticeboard and on the Green Schools Newsletter. Posters were put up in the weeks prior to the Low Energy Day. No interactive whiteboards, no laptops, no printers / copiers, no energy! It showed us how much we depend on energy and electricity and that we should try our best to save energy. We encourage everyone to try to save energy at home also. |

Kaye McDonagh (Green Schools Co-Ordinator) attended the Green Schools Seminar on “Energy” in Macroom on 21st October 2015.
A slogan competition for the Energy Green Code was organised within the school to maintain awareness on energy issues.
There were three winning slogans chosen who all received a “Homework Pass” to use on a day of their choice
and the overall winner also received an Energy Efficient bulb. Well done to Lydia, Mark & Minuk.
Everyone who took part in the competition received a treat.
The children are gaining a greater understanding on energy saving, which is relevant to their everyday lives such as reading meters, action day,
closing the door when leaving the room. They are also conscious of turning off appliances when not in use.
The Green Code is displayed in all classrooms, staff room, Green Schools Noticeboard and the school website.

1st Flag - LITTER & WASTE Theme
During the Family Fun Day on Sunday 15th June 2014, we had the schools first Green Flag Ceremony.
The flag was awarded on the theme of Litter and Waste.
Class Teacher Mr. Seán Newman, thanked the Green School’s Committee for their efforts in helping to receive this prestigious award.
He explained how it had been more than two years of hard work by all the school.
“During that time we made great progress in reducing both litter and waste in the day to day life of the school.
Our efforts involved litter picking, sorting waste into separate bins and the beginning to compost our biodegradable waste”.
He also spoke about “how we undertook a number of fun activities and projects where the children designed posters and other creations made from recycled materials”.

Busy Composting There is a “Weekly Composting Rota” in place where two children take the organic waste bucket containing banana skins, apple cores, orange peels etc. to the compost bin on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. |

He told us about the traditional compost bins which are best placed on grass or earth where insects and micro-organisms can decompose kitchen and garden waste.
It must be moist and there must be some bulky items in it (branches or rolled up cardboard) so air can flow through it to get the composting process started properly.
The children were very interested in the “Green” and “Brown” mix when adding organic materials to the top. Depending on the materials added, you would usually have compost in 6 to 12 months. As fresher materials is always at the top, the more decomposed material is further down.
He spoke about turning them with a pitch fork which helps air get into the pile which promotes composting activity.
The finished compost at the bottom of the bin can be removed through the little door for use around the garden.

The water butt is manufactured from recycled plastic and consists of a stand, a vessel (water tank), a diverter, a tamper proof lid and a tap. The water tank sits on the stand which provides a steady base. A tap at the base of the tank allows for easy filling of a watering can.
It is designed so that it will not overflow. When the water level reaches the diverter, water will flow straight through the downpipe instead of into the water butt.

On the 19th November 2013, a group doing a project on Recycling Centres went to Millstreet Recycling Centre.
We met Pat, our guide for the morning. He told us that all lorries are weighed on arrival to the site. Then the driver delivers materials to be recycled to the special areas. Before the lorry leaves the site, it is weighed again. This informs the staff at the recycling centre as to the amount of recycled materials has been delivered.

We went to the hazardous area where we saw different types of oil. This oil is sent to Germany for recycling. There were lots of batteries in this area. Pat told us about the two types of batteries, dry batteries which are ordinary batteries like AA and wet batteries like car batteries. Also in this area, flammable spray cans, hair spray/deodorant and fluorescent light bulbs.
He showed us the children’s corner, where there are miniature bins with colourful posters to encourage children to recycle. We didn’t have time to view the powerpoint presentation so Pat kindly printed a copy and sent it to the school.
