Active School Flag
We are delighted to announce that we received our Active Schools Flag on Thursday 25th May 2017
and are very proud of our status as an ‘Active School’. During the year, we worked hard to achieve this award and were very busy organising exciting activities to ensure our pupils were active, healthy and happy! Thanks to our Active Schools Committee, to Mr. Newman for coordinating the application and to the parents who took part in many of the activities. |

Visit of Aidan Walsh to raise the Active Flag |
On Wednesday 14th June 2017, Aidan Walsh came to the school to raise our first ever active schools flag.
The flag is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active community. This was a huge achievement for our school and a very proud day for all involved. |
Operation Transformation 10 @ 10 Challenge
This year, Operation Transformation has teamed up with Active School Flag to promote physical activity in primary schools.
To celebrate 10 years of Operation Transformation, all primary schools in Ireland are encouraged to get moving for 10 minutes of exercise at 10am on Friday 10th February 2017. The campaign will help to make exercise fun for primary schools and help give the benefits of health to those who take part. Schools wishing to achieve an Active Flag begin the process by self-evaluating across 3 areas: Physical Education, Physical Activity and Partnerships. Schools must also organise an Active School Week programme and commit to having it as part of their annual school calendar. |
Blue Star Programme
Kay McDonagh travelled to Brussels in April 2016 to represent Carriganima National School as part of the Blue Star programme. She met representatives from Clare, Cork, Galway, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow. The group were given a guided tour of the Parliament. Seán Kelly MEP spoke about the work he does in the European Parliament. He also acknowledged the efforts and work put in by Primary schools across Ireland and said “that it was an honor to be able to host members of the Blue Star initiative”. The Blue Star Programme is an education initiative for primary schools using classroom projects and activities to foster a better understanding and knowledge of the European Union and how it affects the lives of Irish citizens. |

Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP)
The Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) is an entrepreneurial awareness and skills enhancement programme for Primary School children.
The programme aims to help children recognise enterprise and entrepreneurship and to foster an awareness and understanding of the entrepreneur’s role in the community, therefore empowering the child to start to think and act with the initiative, creativity and independence that are invaluable in the modern world. The programme is embedded in the principles of the Primary School Curriculum and utilises an integrated teaching and project-based approach to teach many strands of the Primary Curriculum. |
In late January 2015, children in 3rd to 6th classes learned about what it is to be an Entrepreneur. As part of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme, they had a visit from a local Entrepreneur, Katelijne Rouffa of “Peace of Cake” Macroom, gluten free baking, who told them all about how to start up a business of their own, run it successfully and market the product.
The children then came up with several enterprising ideas and presented them to the “Dragons” in a Dragon Den style event. The Dragons were Katelijne, Mrs. Dineen and Kay McDonagh who then voted for their favourite idea which was a cookbook, “Carrigalious” |
The children were divided into different teams to work on desiging, producing, marketing and selling their product. They conducted market research among the school community and gathered a selection of recipes from various sources. Recipes included dishes from parents and family members. The children designed the book completely on their own and typed up the recipes for the cookbook. They drew pictures for the cover and the winning design was sent to a printing company.
On Friday 1st May 2015, third to sixth classes and Mr. Newman travelled to Mallow for the Junior Entrepreneur Awards Ceremony. They were complimented on their work when they received the Junior Entrepreneur Flag for the school. The children would like to thank their teacher Mr. Newman, the “Dragons”, all who contributed recipes, the parents who drove to Mallow, those who submitted photographs and to their valued customers to date. They have had great success since the launch of their cookbook having sold so many copies. Their involvement in this project has been a very exciting and worthwhile experience for all the children. Each class learned very valuable life-skills such as team work and skills on how to run a business. If you would like to buy a copy of the book, please contact the school. |
Digital Schools Of Distinction
On Wednesday 16th October 2013, Mr. Seán Newman (Class Teacher) and Kay McDonagh (ICT Co-Ordinator) travelled to the Tralee Education Centre to attend a meeting regarding the Digital Schools of Distinction. They registered the school to take part in the programme.
The Digital School of Distinction Award was launched by Minister Ruairí Quinn in September 2013. It promotes excellence in the use of technology in the field of education and supports those involved in those efforts.
In June 2015, our school was awarded the Digital Schools of Distinction recognition for schools who strive for excellence in integrating ICT tools seamlessly into the teaching model within the school.
Over recent years, we have invested heavily in technology and this award is recognition of all the work being done, in the areas of professional development, communication and recording attendance.

We have embraced technology here in Carriganima National School. The Digital Schools of Distinction Award is a flagship programme to promote and acknowledge best practice in the use of ICT. It recognises primary schools who deliver the best educational experience of their pupils through information and computer technology. The award is promoted by the Department of Education and Skills and has been sponsored by Microsoft and Hewlett Packard. |
The benefits of becoming a Digital school of Distinction include access to international resources for teaching and learning, free hardware and software, technical support and opportunities for collaboration.
To receive the award, we had to fulfil identified criteria within five areas - Leadership and Vision, ICT integration in the curriculum, School ICT culture, Continuing Professional Development and Resources and infrastructure school and staff use ICT in a variety of ways.
The school takes pride in the fact that the children and the teachers in the school have access to iPads, laptops, wireless Internet and interactive whiteboards in the classrooms. We are hugely indebted to all of those who have helped us over the years and the help and support from the Parents Association.
