First ever Ministerial visit to Carriganima National School
|
On Friday 30th September 2016, staff, parents, members of the Board of Management and the local community were present to welcome the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Michael Creed. Along with the Minister, Mrs. Dineen welcomed Gerard McHugh, Director of DWEC (Dublin West Education Centre) Tallaght. After a brief summary by Mr. Newman of the Digital Schools of Distinction project, the children entertained the crowd by singing and playing tunes which the Minister remarked on how impressed he was with their talent. Gerard McHugh also remarked on the children’s performance and their overall work and attitude towards the Digital Schools project. Thank you to everyone who helped out and attended the event, to the pupils and staff who ensured the Minister had a memorable visit to Carriganima National School. |
School Tour to University of Limerick (UL) - June 2016
We went on a school tour to University of Limerick (U. L.) on the 16th June 2016.
The children took part in various activities, which included obstacle courses, canoeing, rafting, running track and swimming,
some of which they had never tried previously.
Even though it was a very active day, it was very enjoyable.

Muintir na Tíre Schools Garden Competition - May 2016
We entered our school garden into the Muintir na Tíre school garden competition this year. We submitted a powerpoint presentation in May of our work to date and we had a visit from 2 members of Muintir na Tíre to inspect our work in person and meet some of the team who regularly work in the garden. We look forward to hearing if we are successful or not in the next few weeks.
We would like to thank Finbarr (Caretaker), Kay (School Garden Co-Ordinator), Oana, Constanta and of course the children for all their help.
Proclamation Day - March 2016
Thousands of schools and other educational institutions participated in Proclamation Day, one of the flagship initiatives of the State commemoration programme for the Easter Rising which took place on Tuesday 15th March 2016. All raised the Irish flag and read the Proclamation in separate ceremonies which had been months in the preparation. All primary schools in the country received their copies of the Proclamation and the national flag from members of the Defence Forces over the last six months. The secondary schools received theirs at a ceremony in Croke Park last week. The reading of the Proclamation was followed by a sharing of each school’s own Proclamation for a New Generation, which set out the vision of the Generation of 2016. Pupils in our school then presented a selection of music and songs, either specially commissioned, or from the period of 1916 to which family and friends had been invited to attend. End of year Pledge / Graduation Mass - June 2015
|
A special graduation mass was held in the school on Thursday 4th June 2015. The mass was celebrated by Fr. Wickham and was attended by the 6th class pupils, their families, the other children in the school and members of the school staff and community. All the pupils sang beautifully in the choir. Refreshments were provided afterwards by the Parents’ Association. It was a morning where the class group got to enjoy the friendships they had made over their 8 years in Carriganima school. We hope they have fond memories of their Primary school days and that they are looking forward to the next stage of their educational journey with enthusiasm and confidence. |
May they be blessed with happiness, good health and loyal friendships throughout their life and may they always be a source of pride to their family.
We thank them for their co-operation, support and friendship and we wish them well as they begin Secondary School.
Go n-éirigh an bóthar libh.

Visit by the Defence Forces - September 2015
The 2016 Commemoration Programme will remember and honour those who took part in the 1916 Rising, will reflect on the legacy of that time and will look towards our future. The Presentation included a history of the national flag and the correct protocol for its use. Some of the children read the Proclamation.
Sgt. Chris Hoare and Gnr. Paul O'Rourke came to the school on Tuesday 15th September 2015 at 9.30am and all the parents were invited. We were delighted to be one of the first schools in Cork to receive a visit by the Defence Forces to deliver the National flag as part of the 1916 commemorations. The Department of Education and Skills intends that all primary schools in Ireland will receive a visit to prepare for a display of the Tricolour by students on Proclamation Day on 15th March 2016. |

Halloween Hysteria - October 2015
Thursday 22nd October 2015 was a day of ghosts, ghouls, witches, zombies and fairytale characters in the school.
The children dressed in some funny and spooktacular costumes. After some sweets and treats, some of the parents came in and played traditional Halloween games such as bobbing for apples, being wrapped up like a mummy and some creepy Halloween items to feel.
Another game was to pin the pumpkin by putting eyes, nose and mouth in the right place while they were blindfolded.
It was quite a challenge but many of the children were able to do it. There was great excitement when the teachers joined in on the Halloween fun.
Many thanks to the parents who helped out. It was a creepy and fun success that was enjoyed by all.

Installation of a Weber System External Insulation - 2015
Work on Phase 1 of the installation of the Weber System External Insulation project was carried out during the summer of 2015. The front and side of the school was insulated. At the end of October 2015, work began on phase 2 of the project which consisted of insulating the back and the other side of the school.
By installing this system, we will make long-term savings and reduce our heating bill. It will provide a warmer environment for the children and will make them more aware of conserving energy. The risk of condensation within the wall structure and thermal bridging will be eliminated. It will also improve the current U value of 2.0 wkm on external walls to 0.27 wkm when ethics were installed. Click on the photographs to enlarge them. |
